Book Review: Shadow of the Mountain

Shadow of the MountainGiven this summer’s move and all the topsy-turvy way of life that accompanies it, I forgot that I ever read this book! I discovered it at the bottom of a stack on my desk about two weeks ago. (Sorry, Bethany House.) But my response to finding it was telling: A bit of excitement piqued in me!

Shadow of the Mountain: Exodus is written by Cliff Graham, who is a former Army officer. He draws on his own military experience to write this fictional account of Caleb’s life during and after the Israelites went into Canaan.

It’s important for you to know that I thoroughly enjoy fictional novels that use historical, Scriptural accounts for their foundation. For example, I devoured the Acts of Faith series in very short order.

Also relevant is the fact that I’m not one to enjoy gratuitous violence; my tolerance for it in movies is quite low. In novels, if I encounter it, I will abandon a book immediately. I feel that a gripping story of heart-pounding intensity can be fashioned without describing exactly how one character killed the other. I just don’t think a changed heart and renewed mind should revel in the destruction of another person, even if that person is fictional.

But I digress.

My point is that Shadow of the Mountain: Exodus is well-written historical fiction that doesn’t abuse the Scriptural foundation on which is it built. Graham does a fantastic job of bringing the reader into a rough environment without making him cringe. The story alternates between third person and first person; I appreciate that the author allows Caleb to tell his own story, in his own words. At times, I felt like I was sitting in the tent with Caleb, my legs tucked beneath me, hanging on his every word. But if you want to know Caleb’s (fictional) story, you’ll have to buy the book. 🙂

This is an entertaining book! Thankfully it’s the first in a series; I’m curious to see who Graham will bring to life next! (Book 2 is subtitled Wilderness. Sounds promising!)

If you read Shadow of the Mountain: Exodus, let me know what you think!

Soli Deo gloria,

In exchange for my honest opinion, I received a free copy of this book from Bethany House.

  1. Hi there! I recently read this book and reviewed it as well. I was interested to see if anyone else writes the kind of action-packed novels I do, and was happy to stumble across Cliff Graham’s books. (My review here:

I was wondering if you’re accepting other books to review. My most recent novel is an Amazon bestseller in the Christian historical fiction genre, a War Within: The Healer. I’d be happy to gift you a kindle version or send you a paperback copy if you’d be interested. God bless! Nathan

    1. Hi, Nathan!

I’d be thrilled to review your newest release! I spent a few moments on your website, and I enjoyed reading how you came to write what seem to be thrilling stories. 🙂 How shall we go about arranging things? Emailing me directly works fine on my end; I’ll bring my husband into the loop (copy him) once I hear from you.
